The compound bow is the dominant method of hunting bear. Since it is difficult to pierce the tough skin of a bear, arrows must fly at high speed and with enough weight and kinetic energy to put the bear down. They range from specially tipped arrows that can penetrate the skin to high magnification sights that allow for more accurate sighting of the bear from a greater distance. The arrows are now made of many different types of materials. Since the new bows are able to hold so much force, regular arrows can actually be shattered by the force of the string on the arrow. That is why there are now aluminum and other metal alloy arrows. These are slightly more expensive but last longer than other types. People still use wooden arrows for practice as they can be less expensive. Carbon fiber and fiberglass arrows are also on the market for people to use in different hunting and practice situations.
